In this episode I discuss ADHD and gender identity with Elaine Taylor-Klaus, mother of three, a professional certified coach, passionate advocate for families and the co-founder of ImpactParents.
Elaine discusses how her work with families with children with complex needs led her to explore how gender plays a factor. One of her children, who had been a very complex child, is non-binary. Elaine realized a clear link between gender awareness, sexual orientation and the ability to self-regulate and manage their ADHD.
She explains when someone is dealing with gender issues they are often questioning who they are and how they fit in the world. When she works with families with children questioning their gender identity she recommends giving them the space they need to figure out what’s going on.
Elaine recommends working with a coach who can help navigate questions and provide suggestions of how to tackle issues. She cautions it’s important to check their credentials to make sure they are qualified.
